One of the first bullets of the Postlight mission statement is Drive With Design. How we think about product touches every part of the work we do. As we work for our clients, our product designers, product managers, and engineers constantly ask themselves two core questions: “What are we building—and why are we building it?”
The ultimate validation always comes from people downloading and using the products we design. But it’s also great to earn the recognition of our peers, and that’s why we are thrilled to be named Finalists in the Fast Company Innovation By Design Awards 2018. We have been honored in Web Design for our partnership with The Players’ Tribune and in App & Games for our overhaul of the Audubon Bird Guide.
The Players’ Tribune has become the one place online where you can hear athlete’s unfiltered voices on issues ranging from the personal to political — directly from the athletes themselves. Our team worked directly to overhaul both the front and backend of the experience, and we brought the visual impact of TPT’s rich expanse of sports content to life for fans of all stripes in just 4 months.
TPT wanted to build stronger relationships with its contributors and its audience. We worked with their leadership team to design content “channels” focused around themes and teams, creating unique spaces for athletes to share their stories—including through engaging video series like Out of Context.

For an app as well-regarded as Audubon’s Bird Guide, the team at Postlight worked for months to get into the mind of experienced birders and newcomers alike. Mapping out the extensive patterns of how people capture the details of their daily excursions included hands-on(-binoculars) research with the dedicated team at the Audubon Society.
We worked closely with their team to restructure the app from the ground up, streamlining the workflow to make it simple to log a sighting from anywhere with the guide or through identifying features like color, locomotion and call patterns.
Audubon’s bird guide was completely re-written to be cross-platform—so we created the design system to feel at home in both iOS and Android. Audubon also can use the app to connect birders by using “citizen science” alerts and sharing photos with the community.
We’re happy to have been part of over 250,000 logged bird sightings since the relaunch of this essential guide in April.
