Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Postlight
How Postlight is working toward building a better industry and world.
Postlight is a strategy, design, and engineering firm.
We partner with the world’s best organizations to build digital platforms that serve millions of people. We are builders, and we have a responsibility not only to build great digital products, but a better technology industry and world. Read more about our mission and values.
While fully addressing the effects of systemic racism, sexism, homophobia, and bias is an undertaking that extends well beyond our company, we are committed to efforts that support diversity, equity, and inclusion at Postlight and beyond. All of these efforts are ongoing, and a continual work in progress.
We think it’s important to talk about diversity, equity, and inclusion. We also believe actions speak louder than words. So we keep track of our specific current and ongoing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts here.
On Our Team
On our team, we value representation. Women, people of color, veterans, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community are executives, partners, directors, and managers at Postlight.
To work toward building a more diverse team and a more inclusive environment, we:
- Established a public, company-wide Slack channel for ongoing discussions around diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Hold regular employee education sessions around issues of identity, empathy, inclusion, and bias.
- Introduced career growth frameworks in strategy, product management, product design, and engineering which standardize how we measure capabilities and level employees, to reduce unconscious bias during performance review cycles.
- Host a growing array of internal Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), who come together around shared interests or identities, and donate time and resources to support the causes that matter to them, including: BLK, Caregivers, Environment, Immigrants, Jewish, LGBTQIA+, MIND (Mental Inclusivity + Neurodiversity), and Women+.
- Advertise openings on job boards which specifically target underrepresented communities, including: POCIT (People of Color in Tech), NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers), Women in Tech, Women in Product, Women Who Code, and Tech Ladies.
- Compensate applicants for time taken working on a challenge as part of their interview process, to help make it possible for more candidates to complete their application.
- Improved our candidate interview process with a focus on reducing unconscious bias by establishing scorecards and ensuring diverse interview teams.
- Added the following language to our job listings: “Studies show that women and members of underrepresented groups apply for jobs only if they meet 100% of the qualifications. Postlight encourages everyone interested in a role to apply. We look forward to your application.”
- Create a safe environment where employees feel comfortable sharing their pronouns both internally and externally, and are encouraged to use their colleagues’ correct pronouns.
- Provide gender-neutral restrooms.
- Provide employees with access to inclusive medical benefits packages through UnitedHealthcare. These plans provide employees with access to transgender benefits specialists who work to ensure transgender and non-binary members are supported along their journey, whatever form that may take.
- Expanded our Paid Sick Time policy to cover Mental Health time for therapy appointments or other time to cope with mental health needs.
- Offered unlimited COVID childcare time off and flexible schedules for parents dealing with closed daycare and remote school due to the pandemic.
- Partnered with Pledge Parental Leave to support parents and families at Postlight.
In Our Work
In our work, we measure success in terms of impact: on the world at large, on our clients’ world, and on their constituents’ worlds.
To work toward building products and platforms that are inclusive and serve all their users, we:
- Champion accessibility, both with our clients and in our community through in-person events and advocacy.
- Work with our clients to find the real users of their products, listen to those users, and focus on addressing their actual needs and goals.
- Seek to empower people. We protect people’s data and their time, and stay mindful that even well-intentioned products can create unforeseen consequences.
In Our Community
In our community, we act as part of a network, and work to share our time, space, expertise, and connections.
To promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in our community, we:
- Host events for community outreach and recruiting purposes, and offer our office space to groups after-hours at no cost. Postlight has hosted Girl Develop It, Black Girls Code, Ladies Get Paid, and Mouse, and partnered with The Harlem Children’s Zone on a presentation for students as part of their four-part entrepreneurial skills series with a focus on idea generating.
- Publish and enforce an Event Code of Conduct which communicates that Postlight events are a safe and welcoming space for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, physical ability and appearance, age, race, ethnicity, and religion (or lack thereof).
- Donate time and resources to the organizations driving change we care about. Postlight donated over $100,000 in 2021, including $80,000 via the ERG program. In 2020, Postlight employees donated over $300,000, assisted by company matching, and also gave their time and expertise in the form of volunteer hours to support the Black community.
- Openly and freely share our skills and expertise, in Insights, on the Postlight Podcast, in Postlight Labs, and beyond. We share not just what we are doing but the mistakes we’ve made and what we’ve learned. Wherever possible and practical, we open-source our code, design process, and products.
Postlight’s mission and values states:
We share the responsibility of creating a respectful and inclusive environment. Whoever they are — managers, peers, teammates, applicants, employees, clients, prospects, or guests — unequivocally welcome, support, and celebrate anyone who supports us in our goals. All races, ethnicities, gender identities, gender expressions, sexual orientations, physical abilities, physical appearances, socioeconomic backgrounds, educational backgrounds, nationalities, ages, religions, and beliefs are welcome. As often as possible, tell the world that all are welcome here. Constructively address behaviors that are not in the spirit of our values, accept constructive feedback, and if necessary raise concerns to Human Resources. Advocate for what is fair to all.
This work is continually in-progress. We review and update our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs regularly. To get in touch with us about diversity, equity, and inclusion at Postlight and beyond, send a note to hello@postlight.com.
